Introduction: St John Ambulance Western Australia

Royal Flying Doctor Service

St John Ambulance in Western Australia covers the largest area of any single ambulance service in the world, responsible for 2,525,500 square kilometres or 33% of the total landmass of Australia.

In the metropolitan area there are 27 St John Ambulance depots from Two Rocks in the north to Secret Harbour in the south. These depots are staff by more than 600 Paramedics and Patient Transport Officers. The metropolitan ambulance fleet travels in excess of 3.5 million square kilometres annually, transporting over 140,000 people.

Western Australian Paramedics

There are 162 St John Ambulance locations operating in country WA stretching from Christmas Island to Albany, Esperance, Eucla and Wyndham. The area is serviced by over 1,800 dedicated Volunteer Ambulance Officers and 140 Paramedics, who travel in excess of 1.6 million kilometres within the country area annually, transporting over 35,000 people.

Out of 162 regional locations, 149 of those are staffed entirely by Volunteer Ambulance Officers and the remaining 13 country Sub Centres are made up of a mixture of Volunteer and Career Ambulance Officers. In the larger country areas where population and ambulance call outs are high, Career Paramedics work alongside Volunteer Ambulance Officers to provide the ambulance service for these communities. These areas include Albany, Broome, Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Geraldton, Hedland, Kalgoorlie, Mandurah, Northam, Norseman, Serpentine and Pinjarra.

All of the service’s professional operational members are trained in the management of asthma and carry oxygen and drugs to effectively treat cases that range from mild to life threatening. In regional areas of the State the Paramedics and Volunteer Ambulance Officers work closely with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and RAC Emergency Rescue Helicopter to ensure access to patients in remote locations.
